Why I Believe Change Is Possible
Some lessons are learned through study. Others are learned through living them.
Before I became an EMDR therapist, I experienced EMDR myself. The changes that followed were not limited to new insights or a different understanding of the past. They changed the way I experienced myself, my relationships, and the world around me. What once felt fixed no longer felt fixed. What once seemed likely to remain unchanged began changing.
That experience reshaped more than my understanding of EMDR. It reshaped my understanding of people. It revealed a capacity for growth and transformation that was far greater than I had previously imagined, and it continues influencing the way I approach my work today.
Years later, that perspective remains at the heart of Mercy Road Counseling. People are often carrying more possibility than they realize. Sometimes the most important work is not creating something new, but making room for what has been there all along.
Why EMDR Remains Central to My Work
Some lessons continue revealing themselves long after they are first learned.
Meaningful change is not an abstract idea to me. It is something I have witnessed repeatedly through EMDR, both personally and professionally.
One of the things that continues inspiring me about this work is seeing people move beyond limitations they once assumed were permanent. Experiences that seemed destined to shape the future lose their influence. Old patterns begin giving way to new possibilities. What once felt fixed becomes open to change.
That perspective continues shaping the way I approach every person who walks through the door. Whether someone is navigating the effects of childhood experiences, pursuing recovery, exploring questions of faith, carrying significant responsibility, supporting others professionally, or simply trying to move forward through a difficult season of life, I begin from the same place: meaningful change remains possible.
Prepared for the Work
Meaningful change deserves both compassion and competence.
Suzie Sunkel is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, EMDR Certified Therapist, Transformational EMDR® (T-EMDR) Certified Therapist, and EMDR Consultant. Her work is grounded in extensive training, consultation, and ongoing professional development within the EMDR model.
She completed her EMDR training and advanced certification through EMDR Educators under the instruction of Dr. Andrew Dobo, developer of Transformational EMDR®. What began as a personal experience with EMDR eventually grew into a professional commitment to understanding the model as deeply as possible and helping others benefit from its potential.
Today, Suzie provides both EMDR therapy and consultation, supporting clients as well as therapists pursuing certification, advanced learning, and deeper proficiency in the model. Her commitment to growth remains an active part of the work, reflecting a belief that meaningful development is not only important for those seeking therapy, but for the professionals entrusted to guide it.
